Martin J. Leavitt is a principal at the Law Offices of Sullivan and Leavitt, P.C., one of Michigan’s premier small law firms. Mr. Leavitt has been employed with the Firm since 1968.
Mr. Leavitt handles a wide range of business related matters throughout the State of Michigan and has litigated cases in State and Federal Courts throughout the country, including Michigan Courts at the trial and appellate levels; Federal District Courts in Michigan, Florida, Ohio, Illinois, Colorado, and Iowa; U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal for the Sixth, Seventh, and D.C. Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court. In addition, he has advocated matters for clients before mediators and arbitrators.
Mr. Leavitt has handled numerous business transactions, including the purchasing and selling of business enterprises; investments in business enterprises; restructuring of business enterprises; succession planning for business enterprises; and a wide range of transactions involving the affairs of privately held business enterprises.
Mr. Leavitt specializes in business formations; disputes among owners of businesses and between businesses; labor management relations, including the negotiation and interpretation of collective bargaining agreements; pension withdrawal liability matters, with emphasis in multi-employer pension plans; business planning; transportation matters with emphasis in the motor-carrier industry, including motor carriers operating within and between the United States and Canada.
He has successfully handled labor disputes including matters before the National Labor Relations Board; pension withdrawal liability assessments, and business disputes. He has also been responsible for substantial recoveries resulting from breaches of fiduciary responsibilities by officers and directors of privately held businesses, as well as matters related to these areas of specialization.
